Begin the Convention with an unforgettable message and performance by a frequent guest to public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion and performer in the Robert Altman film by the same name. Jearlyn Steele, together with her brother Billy Steele, a Grammy Award-winning artist, and backed by the voices of the Edward R. Murrow High School Chorus of New York City, will demonstrate the importance of music in our students’ lives.
Plus, honor a special board member - the 2008 recipient of the Everett R. Dyer Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a school board member by NYSSBA.

Dr. Lorraine Monroe translates her extensive experience in New York City public schools as a teacher, dean, assistant principal, principal and deputy chancellor for curriculum and instruction into a guiding set of leadership principles that define the work of her School Leadership Academy. She’ll share her techniques for leading excellent schools that focus on student achievement.

Adult and Teen Needs on the Autism Spectrum

Diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome in 2000, Mr. Carley serves as the executive director of the Global and Regional Asperger’s Syndrome Partnership (GRASP) and has first-hand experience in dealing with autism. Using his own experiences, he’ll give you a greater understanding of the needs of teens and adults on the autism spectrum and provide an understanding of how the expanded diagnosis affects the country as a whole.

Relationships between school boards and superintendents have been fraught at times with tension. This shouldn’t be surprising, given two centuries of multiple transfers of power and control between the two groups. Dr. Mountford will put it all into perspective and share how school boards and superintendents can maintain collegial relationships for the benefit of the students you serve.
