With few exceptions, the Open Meetings Law gives the public access to the deliberations and decision-making process of public entities, including school boards. While the basic concept is simple, compliance can be difficult and the consequences for mistakes serious. A board’s failure to comply with the Open Meetings law can place it in a position of liability in both the judicial system and the court of public opinion.
