AS A WORKSHOP PARTICIPANT, YOU WILL:

  • Work with colleagues to discuss relevant, real-life scenarios and exercise problem-solving skills to better understand how policy can help improve district operations.
  • Learn how to apply policy to controversial topics such as school closure, managing the controversy over state testing, complaints about personnel, as well as topics you and your colleagues suggest.
  • Examine an array of technology options that can assist the policy process.

8:30 - 9:00 a.m. Registration and Continental Breakfast
9:00 - 9:30 a.m. Policy Basics
What does an effective policy-making process look like? We will review the essentials of policy development as a foundation for the board’s work.
9:30 - 10:30 a.m. What Can Policy Do For You? Part 1
Work in small groups to discuss different approaches to one of the following situations: closing an elementary school, managing controversy around state tests, and more.
10:30 - 10:45 a.m. Break
10:45 - 11:45 a.m. What Can Policy Do for You? Part 2
Work in small groups to discuss different approaches to one of the following situations: complaints by staff, managing a building emergency, and more.
11:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Technology that Supports the Policy Process
With advances in technology such as tablets, smartphones, and software that allow document sharing, how can the process of policy be more efficient and effective? Examine new options.
12:15 - 12:30 p.m. Workshop Wrap-Up
