Barbara Mauro is the Area 7 Director of the New York State School Boards Association. As Area 7 Director, Mauro represents school districts in Albany, Columbia, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Warren and Washington counties.
NYSSBA provides advocacy, training and information to school boards in support of their mission to govern the state's public schools. The NYSSBA board establishes policies to supervise, control and direct the business of the Association.
Mauro has been a member of the Capital Region BOCES board since 2006. From 1997-2015, she served on the Niskayuna Central School District Board of Education. During her tenure in Niskayuna, Mauro served as board president in 2005-07, and vice president in 2003-05 and again in 2009-11.
Mauro has been a member of the board of commissioners of the Capital District Regional Planning Commission since 2004, representing Schenectady County. She has served as secretary, treasurer, vice chair and chair. In her capacity as commissioner she also serves as president of the board of the Capital District Youth Center, Inc., which oversees the operations of the Capital District Juvenile Secure Detention Facility in Albany County.
Mauro graduated from Duquesne University with a bachelor's degree in English literature. She received a master's degree from the SUNY Albany School of Criminal Justice and a law degree from New York University School of Law.
A retired attorney, Mauro is a former legislative researcher and New York State Assembly committee counsel. She and her husband Frank have resided in Niskayuna since 1993.
