Ronald J. Ellerbe of the Freeport Union Free School Board has been named Advocate of the Year by the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) for his service and dedication to public education. The award was presented to Ellerbe at the Association’s Capital Conference in Albany on March 14.

“Ron is the embodiment of school board service and advocacy,” said Timothy Kremer, NYSSBA executive director. “Ron consistently meets with his local lawmakers and is always providing information to NYSSBA to help with statewide advocacy efforts.”

A well-known advocate for education on Long Island, Ellerbe has served children, their families and the local community as a board member for 18 years. He served as vice president of the Freeport Union Free School Board from 2006 to 2008 and as president from 2000 to 2001.

Ellerbe is active with NYSSBA, where he served on the Resolutions Committee and also on the Legislative Committee as a liaison to the New York State 18th Assembly District.

“I understand the award is given to the person who best exemplifies advocacy beyond the district level,” said Dr. Kishore Kuncham, superintendent of the Freeport Union Free School District. “Ron is that person. He is a board member who truly sees his role in the broadest possible terms.”
