The New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) named Madeline Smith of the Pelham Union Free School District Board of Education this year’s Advocate of the Year for her service and dedication to public education. The award was presented to Smith at the Association’s Capital Conference in Albany on March 14.
“Madeline continues to raise the bar for her volunteerism on the Pelham Union Free School District Board of Education,” said Timothy G. Kremer, NYSSBA’s executive director. “Her ability to rally parents to send hundreds of letters to New York State legislators to protect student privacy has made a difference for her community.”
Smith’s service on the Pelham Union Free School District Board of Education dates back to 2012. Smith’s membership on the board includes extensive committee responsibilities including Chairperson for the Engagement and Outreach Committee. Her work on this committee resulted in the creation and implementation of monthly school board “coffees,”which are informal forums open to the entire community. These forums strengthened the relationship between the school and surrounding community, thus advancing student achievement.
Smith is also the current Chairperson of the Excellence and Equity Committee and holds positions on the Finance, Audit, Strategic Planning, Personnel and Negotiations committees.
“Our community and, most particularly, our students are the beneficiaries of Madeline’s extraordinary efforts,” said Lisa Kiernan, president of the Pelham Union Free School District Board of Education.
