Advocacy Alert: NYSSBA Supported School Safety Bill Passes the NYS Senate
May 3, 2016
Earlier today, a NYSSBA supported bill that would make all threats of mass violence on school grounds a felony in New York State passed the Senate by a vote of 56-2.
This legislation, (S.430-A, Gallivan) was advanced following the adoption of a resolution at the 2013 annual business meeting.
NYSSBA Governmental Relations staff will now turn our focus to the Assembly where this legislation has yet to see movement. We need your help!
To send a letter to your Assemblymember and to view NYSSBA’s memorandum of support see the link below.
NYSSBA Seeks Guidance on Community Schools Set Asides
The recently enacted budget included language that required that certain districts use a portion of their Foundation Aid increases for “Community Schools.” However, little guidance was provided in the bill language itself. As a result, districts must look to the State Education Department for assistance in determining how they might spend these funds.
NYSSBA has shared our recommendations for such guidance, calling for the most flexible uses possible under the law and will share all new information as it becomes available.
Democrat Todd Kaminsky Declared Winner in SD-9
Now former Assemblyman Todd Kaminsky has been declared the winner in the race to replace former Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos. This election is not expected to have an immediate effect on the balance of power in the State Senate, though we will continue to watch as the November elections approach.
