Advocacy Alert: National School Boards Action Center Reception

At the end of July, each of the major political parties will hold their conventions before heading to their districts for August District Work Period. The National School Boards Association’s Political Action Committee will be hosting receptions at each of these national conventions. They have extended an invitation to local school board members who will be serving as party delegates or who will be attending either convention to join them.

Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Regulations
The U.S. Education Department is continuing the regulatory process for ESSA. On July 11, the Department released proposed regulations relating to assessments under Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The proposed regulations align with the consensus agreement reached by the negotiated rulemaking committee that concluded its work in April. The comment period will be open until September 9. The comment period for the previously released accountability regulations closes on August 1.
NYSSBA Resolutions Deadline Approaching
The deadline for your district or BOCES to submit resolutions and bylaw amendments to be considered by the voting delegates at the annual business meeting is fast approaching! All resolutions must be received no later than 5:00pm, August 1. Information on how to submit a resolution or bylaw amendment can be found below.
NYSSBA / NSBA Federal Issues Webinar
Registration for the NYSSBA and National School Boards Association webinar on July 29 is open. Join the Governmental Relations team and our federal advocacy partners to discuss the implementation and the regulatory process for the Every Student Succeeds Act, updates on the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act and the federal budget.
APPR Plan Approval Update
As of July 7, 210 districts have approved 3012-d plans while 236 districts have submitted plans and are awaiting approval from the State Education Department. That leaves 473 districts that have not submitted plans. The deadline to receive plan approval is December 31. Based on plan approval, $2.15 billion in state aid remains at risk.
