Edward Szumowski, president of the Broadalbin-Perth Central School District Board of Education, has been honored as School Board Member of the Week, part of an eight-week campaign celebrating school board service by the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA).

The campaign – entitled “Do You Know Who I Am?” – tells the story of individual school board members such as Szumowski and the contributions they make in their communities. The campaign runs through March 21.

School board members can help improve student achievement in their districts through proper allocation of resources, greater collaboration with state policymakers – particularly on Common Core implementation – and listening closely to staff.

Those are among the findings of a new research report on school board service by the New York State School Boards Association.
