NYSSBA Webinars

Webinar Calendar!
After piloting a series of complimentary webinars in 2009, NYSSBA recognized that webinars are a training and information-sharing vehicle valued by school board members. Of the almost 150 who participated in the pilot webinars, the unanimous response was "Do more!"

A webinar is a live meeting that participants attend from their own computers via the Internet.  Similar in format to a conference call, webinars offer attendees the added benefit of watching a presentation on their own computer screen.  Webinars are an interactive experience, as attendees and presenters can converse with each other throughout.

School Board Service During Difficult Times

Join us for a candid exchange on what you can do to be the best school board leader possible when your community needs you most.

Given the current political and economic environments, the breadth and complexity of school board decisions can be overwhelming. Increasing time commitments, the potential for unpopular decisions, and deliberations that can get ugly and personal make this a very difficult time to be a school board member, whether you are a seasoned veteran or a rookie.

As a school board member, you understand the importance of a good education and the impact public schools have on your community, especially in hard times. If not school boards, who will oversee policies and program quality? At the same time, you have a seemingly endless list of other priorities, including:

  • Assuring a safe school environment
  • Hiring well qualified staff
  • Planning a responsible budget and spending wisely
  • Preparing students for college
  • Increasing the high school graduation rate
  • Educating at-risk and special needs students
  • Accounting for early childhood education
  • Ensuring an equitable distribution of resources
  • Increasing teacher quality
  • Managing professional development
  • Screening out ineffective individuals
  • Boosting community participation
  • Navigating through fiscal uncertainty
  • Equipping schools for student health and safety epidemics
  • Understanding bullying and school violence
  • Considering consolidation, mergers and cost-cutting
  • Building 21st century learning skills

The truth is, there is much one leader CAN do to bring about change, and YOU are that leader!
Join in the discussion and gain perspective, energy and strength to tackle your work!
