NYSSBA Report Outlines School Board Connection to Student Achievement

School board members can help improve student achievement in their districts through proper allocation of resources, greater collaboration with state policymakers – particularly on Common Core implementation – and listening closely to staff.
Those are among the findings of a new research report on school board service by the New York State School Boards Association.
The report, entitled “In their own Words,” features interviews with seven school board members from around the state on such topics as why school board members serve their communities, what they consider to be socially responsible service, and how they find their work meaningful and rewarding.
The report is part of a NYSSBA’s “Do You Know Who I Am?” campaign to celebrate school board service.
Among the other important roles identified by school board members in the report are: providing a safe environment for students and staff, establishing goals for the district and monitoring progress toward those goals, and developing meaningful real world connections to the curriculum.
