The good news is today’s graduation rates show slight progress in the percentage of students graduating statewide, and that rate has been trending upward.

The bad news is that we continue to see persistent achievement gaps based on race and ethnicity, as well as school district wealth.

School boards can play a huge role in raising graduation rates and closing the achievement gap by allocating funds in such a way that they improve student achievement, choosing the right leadership for their district, granting tenure to only the most qualified educators, keeping the community engaged, and providing careful oversight of results.

We are not yet realizing our vision of having every student achieve success. The only true pathway to success is through hard work, perseverance, and proper resources.
