Advocacy Update: NYSED Releases Draft Learning Standards

September 28, 2016

Last week, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) released new draft New York State P-12 English Language Arts and Mathematics Learning Standards for public comment. The new draft standards are the result of the NYSSBA supported year-long effort to gather feedback from teachers and parents. Two committees comprised of more than 100 teachers and parents reviewed every standard and recommended changing 60 percent of the ELA and 55 percent of the mathematics standards.

These draft standards are now available for comment by the public. NYSED will be accepting public comments on the draft standards through November 4.

To comment, please download the grade level you would like to comment on and then complete the survey questions. The surveys include questions about the draft standards as well as a comment box for each section.

School Safety Supports

Throughout this year a number of changes dealing with school health and safety have been adopted, including mandatory water testing for lead, changes to fire and lockdown drills, school safety plans and mandatory training.

The State Education Department has made a number of materials and resources available to support districts as they change plans and training programs.

Those resources can be viewed below.
