Anne M. Byrne - National School Boards Association Representative

Anne M. Byrne is the National School Boards Association Representative and President of NSBA, an ex officio position of the New York State School Boards Association. She served as immediate past president from 2006-2007 and as president during 2004-2005. In 2002-2003 Byrne served as vice president and the Area 10 Director from 1997 to 2003. As Area 10 Director, she represented school boards in Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties. 

NYSSBA provides advocacy, training and information to school boards in support of their mission to govern the state's public schools. The NYSSBA board establishes policies to supervise, control and direct the business of the Association. Byrne has served on the board’s Executive, Operations, and Policies and Bylaws Committees, and represented the board on the Commissioner’s Advisory Committee. 

Since 1981, Byrne has been a member of the Nanuet School Board, on which she has served as president and vice president. 

Byrne has served as vice president and president of the Rockland County School Boards Association. She is also a member of the Executive Committee on the  Mid-Hudson School Study Council and was president in 2010-2011. She is a founding member of the Hudson-Long Island Coalition for responsible state funding, a nine-county coalition, and served as its chairwoman. 

Byrne's leadership on behalf of school boards was recognized in 1994 when she received the EDDY Award from the Rockland County School Boards Association, the award for excellence in school board service from the Mid-Hudson School Study Council, and, in 1995, NYSSBA's Everett R. Dyer Award for Distinguished School Board Service. She was recently honored by the Westchester-Putnam School Boards Association for outstanding contributions to public education. 

She is a religious education teacher and Eucharistic minister and has been a parish council officer. She is a lifetime member of PTA and a member of the Orangetown Parks and Recreation Committee. Byrne served as a member of the Community Advisory Panel for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Rockland County's largest employer. 

Byrne is also a published author, having written a book about Rockland County during the Revolutionary War. 

Byrne received her R.N. from St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing and a bachelor’s degree from Pace University. She and her husband Patrick have raised three children in the public schools.
