Everett R. Dyer Award for Distinguished School Board Service
NYSSBA recognizes the commitment of school boards and school districts with this prestigious award.
The Everett R. Dyer Award for Distinguished School Board Service is presented annually to a current or former school board member to recognize their outstanding contributions to public education and children. Named to honor a former NYSSBA executive director, it is the Association’s oldest recognition award and is presented annually at the NYSSBA Annual Convention & Education Expo in October.
2020 Award Guidelines
The New York State School Boards Association's Everett R. Dyer Award for Distinguished School Board Service is presented annually to a current or former school board member, who, in the judgment of the NYSSBA Awards Committee, should be recognized for outstanding contributions to public education and children in their own school district.
How Candidates Are Evaluated
The NYSSBA Awards Committee will review submitted nomination forms based on the following:
- A School Board Member in a school district that is currently a NYSSBA member district
- The quality and quantity of the candidate's contributions to public education
- The extent to which the candidate's recognition will inspire other school board members to make similar or even greater contributions. The winner should be a role model for school board members.
- Validation through 3 submitted Letters of Recommendation, one of which must be from the district’s Superintendent
DEADLINE IS JULY 17, 2020.
Please use the official 2020 Everett R. Dyer Award for Distinguished School Board Service Nomination Form to submit nominations online.
Handwritten forms will not be accepted.
To ensure objectivity, NYSSBA Awards Committee members may not nominate candidates. All present and former school board members, belonging to current NYSSBA member school districts, are eligible. Current members of NYSSBA's Board of Directors are excluded from the nomination. However, past members who have been off the board at least three years may be nominated.
The form must include a resolution of a member board of education nominating the candidate for the award. See box below for sample resolution:
Sample Board Resolution
Motion made by John Doe, seconded by Betty Jones:
That the Board of Education of the ABC School District hereby nominates Jane Smith of the
Suburban Board of Education for the Everett R. Dyer Award for Distinguished School Board Service.
If the NYSSBA Awards Committee is unable to select a candidate from those nominations received, because the committee concludes no candidate meets the award’s standards, no award will be presented.
The NYSSBA Awards Committee will review the nominations in July. The award will be presented during NYSSBA’s 2020 Annual Convention in New York City October 29-31, 2020, at a time to be determined.
