Participants will receive 4 points in the School Board U Recognition Program for each module completed.
Cost:
Members: $55 per module - or take all five modules for $185.
Nonmembers: $110 per module - or take all five modules for $370.

 

Every school board or BOCES board member must complete state-approved, mandated fiscal oversight training within their first year of office.

Our comprehensive, easy-to-follow format will answer all of your questions - from basic how-to inquiries to complex policy-related issues.

PROGRAM AGENDA
7:45 - 8:30 a.m. Registration/Continental Breakfast
8:30 - 9:45 a.m. Module 1: School District Finances - Roles and Responsibilities
Understand your board's financial stewardship role and its fiscal oversight responsibilities. Learn the responsibilities of key financial positions such as the claims auditor, treasurer, and audit committee, and their relationship with the board. Examine the internal and external audit, and how to utilize these functions for proper safeguarding of district resources.
9:45 - 11:00 a.m. Module 2: Building School District Fiscal Fitness
Explore the principal sources of school district funds and major guidelines affecting disposition of funds from each source. Learn why the district prepares a budget and obtains voter approval of that budget. Understand laws and rules affecting the budget process.
11:00 - 11:15 a.m. Break
11:15 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Module 3: Managing School District Fiscal Fitness
Study financial management and accounting practices that promote fiscal fitness. Discover how to project cash flow, make executive budget transfers and more. Understand how mismanagement of fund balance and reserve funds can impact your district.
12:30 - 1:15 p.m. Lunch
1:15 - 2:30 p.m. Module 4: Monitoring School District Fiscal Fitness
Learn what information your board should receive regularly, in what form, and from whom. Identify elements of financial reports that warrant your special attention to ensure the district's financial health.
2:30 - 3:30 p.m. Module 5: Preventing Fraud, Waste and Abuse of District Resources
Learn the attitudes and conditions conducive to fraud, waste and abuse of district resources, and how your district can prevent them. Understand how segregation of duties, internal controls, policy and oversight can protect precious resources. Explore what to do if the board or others suspect irregularities.
