Board members will earn 10 points for each day in NYSSBA’s School Board U Recognition Program.

Course fee includes resource materials, continental breakfast and a non-refundable $50 administrative fee.

Cancellations will not be refunded after the pre-registration/cancellation deadline. No-shows will be billed.

  1. Understand the budget development process and best practices to inform the community of your district's budgetary needs upon which they will vote.
  2. Build your fiscal skills to ensure taxpayer money is being used prudently and effectively to meet the educational objectives of the district.

You’ll learn:

  1. The budget development process and legal requirements
  2. How to align the budget to your school district’s priorities and goals
  3. How to assess the fiscal health of your district
  4. The implications of the tax levy cap, tax base, state aid and other factors on the budget
  5. The best practices for communicating the budget to the public

Board members and superintendents will leave flexing their fiscal know-how.

Welcome and Program
Your vital role and responsibility in exercising fiscal oversight of your school district's budget will be brought to life through this rigorous program.  It will walk you through multiple segments that pertain to the budget development process.  This process will include assessment of the budget and how it aligns to your school district's goals from staffing needs and educational programming to determining your district's fiscal health, understanding the tax implications from the tax cap, state aid runs and other factors.  You’ll learn to effectively monitor the budget throughout the year and to communicate budget information to the public.
