Is student suspension effective?

Attend NYSSBA’s Policy Workshop and learn how to decrease the amount of student suspension in your district by implementing new practices to improve school climate.

9:10 - 9:15 a.m.	Welcome and Introductions
9:15 - 9:45 a.m.	Disciplining Students: Is the Goal Punishment or Rehabilitation? Learn what research tells us is the most effective means by which districts can alter the behavior of misbehaving students.
9:45 - 10:15 a.m.	Laws Controlling Student Discipline and State and Federal Oversight Hear what legal protections students are afforded under the law and the negative implications for school districts when such protections are not provided.
10:15 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.	Break
10:30 - 11:15 a.m.	The Benefits of Considering Disciplinary Alternatives Prior to Suspension When school districts remove students from the learning environment without considering other options, negative consequences can follow.  Learn why the consideration of other options can be beneficial for students, districts and society at large.
11:15 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.	Implementing the Law in a Pedagogically Appropriate Manner How can schools address student misbehavior beyond only considering suspension? How can school districts ensure that implementing such new practices improves the school climate?  Learn what tools districts can provide to their staff to better enable them to manage classrooms, avert disruptions and garner support for practices that do not involve suspension.

1:00 - 1:45 p.m.	Policy Development: The Code of Conduct How should your district’s policies be modified to lessen instances of students’ behavior? Learn how to spot “troublesome” language that could be affecting the quality of education students are receiving.  See what changes NYSSBA Policy Services is making to its sample Code of Conduct.
1:45 - 2:15 p.m.	Results: How to Measure Success Learn how to gauge whether the changes that your district is implementing are accomplishing their desired effect.
2:15 - 2:30 p.m.	Concluding Remarks and Program Evaluation

Course fee includes resource materials, continental breakfast, lunch and a non-refundable $50 administrative fee. Cancellations will not be refunded after the pre-registration/cancellation deadline. No-shows will be billed at the full registration fee.
