Overcoming Challenges Facing Your District

This workshop will address the ever changing climate of New York State public education.  Attendees will:

  • Have their pressing questions answered by NYSSBA attorneys and fellow clerks
  • Learn how new laws sparked by the #MeToo movement changes a school districts’ sexual harassment policies
  • Hear updates on election procedures that will help districts avoid common pitfalls and errors
  • Observe a fictional board meeting where some things go right and some go very wrong

Leave feeling prepared to address the issues your board members and school administrators are asking about.

9:00 - 9:05 a.m. Welcome and Introductory Remarks
9:05 - 9:45 a.m. Coffee Talk
Grab your coffee, bring your questions and let’s chat. Ask NYSSBA’s attorneys about legal topics for which you need clarification, or ask your fellow clerks for tips and tricks on how they’ve handled issues your district is encountering. 
9:45 – 10:00 a.m. Break
10:00 - 10:45 a.m. New York State’s Response to the #MeToo Movement
New York State has adopted a new law designed to address sexual harassment. Gain an understanding of the law and how it fits in with federal laws governing sexual harassment. Learn about necessary policy updates mandated by the law and how they will assist you in staffing board policy committees.
10:45 - 11:45 a.m. An Update on Elections 
Recent decisions made by the commissioner of education have highlighted pitfalls and errors surrounding elections. Learn how your district can address these issues and ensure your election procedures are up-to-date therefore reducing the risk of an election being challenged.
11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. Lunch
12:45 - 2:00 p.m. Lessons from a Mock Board Meeting 
Travel with your guides to a fictional district and observe a board meeting where some things go right and some go very wrong. Learn from the mistakes of the fictional board with respect to Open Meetings Law, minutes, parliamentary procedure and more.
2:00 - 2:15 p.m. Closing Remarks and Evaluations


Recognition Program:
All NYSSBA member school boards are eligible for recognition in this program. Credit will accrue for listed events and activities for individuals serving on a NYSSBA member board.
Board members will earn 20 points for attending the NYSSBA Summit.
