Catherine M. Romano is the Area 12 Director of the New York State School Boards Association. As Area 12 Director, Romano represents school boards in Suffolk County.
NYSSBA provides advocacy, training and information to school boards in support of their mission to govern the state’s public schools. The NYSSBA board establishes policies to supervise, control and direct the business of the Association. Romano sits on the Investment Advisory Committee.
Romano has been a member of Eastern Suffolk BOCES Board since 2014, sitting on the Legislative Advocacy and Communications, Diversity and Equity, and Strategic Planning committees. Romano was a member of the Islip Board from 2004 – 2016, serving as president from 2005 – 2013, vice president in 2013 and 2014, and founded the Audit, Legislative Action, and Policy committees. Romano is also a member of the Nassau Suffolk School Boards Association, chairing the Finance committee and is a member of the N-SSBA Legislation committee.
Romano is the co-founder and leadership team member since 2007 of the New York State Family Engagement Coalition/Same Page Summit; vice president of REFIT (Reform Education Financing Inequities Today); vice president of the NYSPTA and a member of the Education, Family Engagement and Resolutions committees for over 15 years and served on the National PTA on the Field Service, Legislation and Elections (chair) committees. She also serves as vice president and secretary of the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet.
Romano is a retired educator and nursery school director (12 years); other experiences include EPIC: Every Person Influences Children NYC director, corporate trainer/organization development for a major bank and a personal computer company.
Romano has an Education N-6 masters degree from Dowling College and a business management degree from St. John's University.
Romano and her husband, Rick, have one daughter, Katie, a music educator in the South Country School District.
