State Education Department Calls for Common Core Learning Standards Review

State Education Department Announces Common Core Learning Standards Review

State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia has announced the State Education Department plans to engage in a statewide review of the Common Core Learning Standards. NYSSBA supported legislation that called for such a comprehensive review at the end of the legislative session. 

On Wednesday, October 21st, SED will release an online review tool. School board members, administrators, educators, parents and all members of the public will have the opportunity to review each standard and comment. When the review is released, NYSSBA will distribute it and we encourage everyone to comment, and share in their community. 


NYSSBA Annual Business Meeting, October 20th at 8:00 am

The NYSSBA annual business meeting is less than a week away. Next Tuesday, delegates from around the state will gather to consider proposed resolutions and amendments to the Association's bylaws. 

Adopted resolutions are the official position statements of the Association and remain in effect for five years, unless achieved or rescinded.

NYSSBA Executive Director Tim Kremer Appointed to Governor Cuomo's Common Core Task Force

In addition to SED's review of the Common Core Learning Standards, Governor Cuomo has appointed a task force to review the standards and issues related to implementation. School board members around the state will be represented by NYSSBA's Executive Director Tim Kremer. Read statements from NYSSBA and Governor Cuomo below. 


NYSSBA Presents Testimony on Receivership at Assembly Education Committee Hearing

The Assembly Education Committee held a hearing to seek feedback on the recently implemented receivership law.  NYSSBA Director of Governmental Relations Julie Marlette provided remarks to the committee calling for time, funding and flexibility in enacting the law. State Education Department Seeks Educator Nominees to Assist Test Development

SED will be convening several new committees to assist in test development for grade 3-8 English language arts and mathematics assessments. These committees will review test items and/or passages to ensure that they meet certain quality requirements. The Department is requesting that districts send educator nominations for placement on these committees. The Department is also seeking educator nominations to work on issues relating to Regents exams and the NYSESLAT. The deadlines for submissions of nominees are due in short order, so please choose district nominees as soon as possible. The full notice sent by the department can be read below:
