NYSSBA delegates elect new president, board officers

 Bergtraum of Long Island elected president of the state School Boards Association;

Miller, Langstaff, Nespeca elected board officers

Susan Bergtraum of Old Westbury, NY was elected president of the New York State School Boards Association. Her one-year term begins Jan. 1, 2016.

Bergtraum was elected Oct. 20 at NYSSBA’s Annual Business Meeting in New York City, which was held in conjunction with NYSSBA’s 96th Annual Convention & Education Expo attended by nearly 2,500 members of the education community.

In introducing her president’s theme, “Student Success through Leadership,” Bergtraum cited the desire of school boards to improve the lives of children and others. “Think about it. That’s why we first got into school board service,” she said.

Bergtraum has been a board member of the Nassau BOCES since July 2006. She is a former president and vice president of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association, and was a member of the East Williston Board of Education from 1991-2006. 

She completed both her undergraduate and graduate studies at Queens College, earning a bachelor’s in education and a masters in school psychology. She taught in New York City and Washington, D.C.

Other elected officers

In addition to Bergtraum, William Miller of Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES was elected to his first term as 1st vice president. Fred Langstaff of Eastern Suffolk BOCES was elected to his first term as 2nd vice president. Thomas Nespeca of Webster and Monroe 1 BOCES was elected to a third term as treasurer.

Miller is also the Area 5 Director for NYSSBA, where he represents school districts in Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, Oneida, Herkimer and Madison counties.  Miller was elected to the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Board of Education in 2002. He was on the Mount Markham school board from 1993 to 2005, serving as president for six years.

Langstaff is also the Area 12 Director, where he represents school boards in Suffolk County.  He has been a member of Eastern Suffolk BOCES Board since 1998 and the board’s clerk since 2003. Previously, he served nine years on the Sayville school board, where he was president for one year and vice president for two years.

Nespeca  is a former president of NYSSBA  and currently serves as the Board Chair of the Investment Advisory Council. He has been a member of the Webster School Board since 1998, having served as president and vice president. He is also a member of the Monroe County School Boards Association, having served as president for the 2004–2005 school year.

NYSSBA provides advocacy, training and information to school boards in support of their mission to govern the state’s public schools. The NYSSBA board establishes policies to supervise, control and direct the business of the Association
