Advocacy Alert: NYSSBA Call to Action, 2019 Budget

March 19, 2019

Following the release of the Legislative budget proposals last week, the Governmental Relations team is advocating for NYSSBA's budget priorities, including:

Make your district's voice heard! Consider sending a letter on behalf of your board to your legislators advocating for your board's priorities. A sample letter is included below. For assistance identifying your district's representatives, please contact Belinda Heckler, Governmental Relations Representative and Grassroots Advocacy Manager at Belinda.heckler@nyssba.org.

If you would like to send an individual letter as well, a letter is available in the NYSSBA Action Center.

For a comparison of the three proposals, see the compilation of NYSSBA's analyses of the three proposals below:

NYSSBA Statement on Legalization of Marijuana

Yesterday, NYSSBA Executive Director Timothy G. Kremer released a statement calling on the legislature to address the question of the legalization of marijuana outside the budget process to allow for a full discussion of the issue. NYSSBA's statement can be accessed below.

Advocacy Day - Schools' Choice as Polling Places

NYSSBA members have continued to raise concerns about the use of school district buildings as polling places and wish to have the right to decline that designation. Legislation has been introduced that would allow districts to decline use of their buildings for voting in state, federal and local elections. This bill (A.4737, Galef) would also allow districts to move school district elections to a building other than a school building.

NYSSBA is planning an advocacy day on Tuesday, April 30th to promote this important legislation. If your district would be interested in participating in this event, please contact Belinda Heckler at 518-783-3742 or Belinda.heckler@nyssba.org.

NYSSBA's Governmental Relations team will continue to report on these and other issues. For more information, visit our Key Issues Page.
