In May 2017, the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) issued a report analyzing the extent to which there was a teacher shortage in the state. It concluded that teacher shortages in New York were not widespread, but rather concentrated in a small number of subjects, most notably science, special education, foreign languages, mathematics, and English instruction for students whose primary language is not English.
