State Budget Update

As state budget negotiations continue without a final agreement, state legislators passed a second short-term budget extender earlier today. The short-term extender was necessary to allow the state to meet certain payroll obligations. This extender runs through Monday, April 7. Presuming a state budget is not agreed upon by then, a third extender would likely be necessary.

Items that seem to still be under active negotiation include involuntary confinement, the banning of mask wearing during certain public protests and funding for the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA). To reiterate from our most recent state budget advocacy update, school aid does not seem to be a controversial issue this year, as the Governor and two legislative houses offered generally consistent proposals.
