State Budget Update

On Tuesday, the Senate and Assembly released their “one house” budget proposals, reflecting each house’s respective responses to the executive budget. The NYSSBA Governmental Relations team reviewed and analyzed each proposal. You can view our analyses below.

Assembly One House Analysis

Following the release of the one house budgets, NYSSBA Governmental Relations drafted a “Final State Budget Priorities” document for use in our advocacy during these final weeks of negotiation until a new state budget is agreed upon. We will be actively discussing these issues, and others, in continued conversations with state policymakers. You are welcome to share this document directly with state legislators.

Take Action!

We have created a Take Action campaign reflective of our final budget priorities. The letter is designed to be sent directly to your state representatives and the Governor. You are also able to customize the letter so that your elected officials know the state budget issues that are important to you and your schools. Please also feel welcome to share this Take Action opportunity with your broader school community.

NYSSBA Priority Legislation Passes Both Houses

A bill directly reflecting a NYSSBA position statement, S.6734-A (Fahy) / A.4382-A (Paulin), successfully passed through the Senate this week after passing the Assembly last month. The legislation provides that, where a school board has successfully sought voter approval to expand the number of board seats, the special election to fill the new seat(s) will be held at the next annual election. Currently, the special election must be held 45-60 days after voters approve the expansion, and school boards and district clerks have found the fast turnaround to be unworkable and/or too costly to pursue.

2026 Resolutions Survey

The 2026 NYSSBA Resolutions Survey was emailed last week to all NYSSBA members. This important survey is designed to gauge member sentiment on a series of important current or potential education issues and is a critical part of your membership. Responses to the survey may be used to develop resolutions for consideration by delegates at NYSSBA’s Annual Business Meeting. Survey results will be included in the 2026 Resolution Toolkit and will be sent to the full membership in mid-April. The survey will be open through March 23.
