Today is the final day of regularly scheduled legislative session for 2025. The state Senate has indicated their intent to stick to the current calendar, while the Assembly has suggested that they plan to remain in Albany until early next week.
Until both legislative houses officially conclude their work, we are continuing to push our final priority list of bills that have yet to pass both houses of the legislature. You can participate in this advocacy by sending the list directly to your state legislators via the Take Action tool below.
Additional NYSSBA Priority Bills Pass Legislature
Since our last update, two additional pieces of legislation which the NYSSBA Governmental Relations team has been advocating for successfully passed both houses of the legislature.
S.6372 (Mayer) / A.7631 (Lunsford) would set the probable usefulness of judgments and claims resulting from certain child sexual abuse cases to up to 30 years.
S.6737 (Fahy) / A.4683 (Paulin) would allow boards of education to hold their organizational meeting on any date on or before the Monday after July 20th.
NYSSBA Opposes Project Labor Agreement (PLA) Construction Legislation
NYSSBA is opposing proposed legislation that would require all school districts on Long Island undertaking construction projects of at least $1 million to only use project labor agreements (PLAs). PLAs are a form of collective bargaining agreement between a customer and a labor union that govern employment on an individual construction project. PLAs set out requirements for union workers at the job site and can include things such as working conditions or limitation of strikes.
NYSSBA has been sharing concerns with legislators, legislative staff and other stakeholders, and recently joined ASBO New York in issuing a formal opposition memo to the bill. You can send a message to your state legislators sharing your concern about this legislation via the Take Action below. Please also share this Take Action message with your broader school community.
