We are encouraged by Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order today requiring Internet Service Providers (ISPs) who enter into contracts with New York State to adhere to net neutrality principles.
While this action does not apply directly to school districts, it is a good first step toward bringing net neutrality principles back into New York State after the Federal Communications Commission eliminated these federal protections.
Net neutrality prevents ISPs from blocking or discriminating against online educational content, or charging small online education companies significantly more to deliver content. That could impact school districts.
The New York State School Boards Association continues to support legislation that would extend net neutrality principles to ISPs that provide connectivity to public school districts and localities, which we hope is the next step in state action to resolve this issue.
