Dr. Nellie A. Bush, from Montgomery County, earns NYSSBA’s top honor for board service

FOR RELEASE: October 7, 2024

Dr. Nellie A. Bush, a member of the Greater Amsterdam School District board of education, will receive the New York State School Boards Association’s highest recognition in October.

Dr. Bush, who has been a school board member for 13 years, will be presented with the Everett R. Dyer Award for Distinguished School Board Service during the October 20 opening session at NYSSBA’s 2024 Annual Convention & Education Expo in New York City. This recognition is given by NYSSBA each year to a current or former board member who demonstrates the highest level of positive impact on K-12 education and students in their school district.

"This milestone award for board service recognizes Dr. Nellie A. Bush’s dedication to K-12 education, her community, and the legions of students she has impacted over the years," said NYSSBA President Sandra Ruffo.

Dr. Bush, a new inductee to the district’s Hall of Fame, has served on numerous board committees and acted as chairperson for the Greater Amsterdam School District’s board of education board policy committee. She always offers great insight to her school board about curriculum and teaching instruction, according to a letter written by Greater Amsterdam School District Superintendent Richard J. Ruberti, Jr. in support of her nomination.

Training is a key aspect of Dr. Bush’s board accomplishments. She spearheads board engagement in professional development opportunities including NYSSBA trainings. She also trains board members on topics related to confidentiality.

Dr. Bush champions her district’s successes through outreach and engagement efforts including letters to the editor about student achievements and monthly interviews on local radio stations about school board happenings.

Students and colleagues alike express gratitude for the positive impact Dr. Bush has had on them. "I have witnessed firsthand in interactions with former students and teachers that Dr. Bush has been a mentor and role model to many," said Ruberti.
