Amber Thousand, a member of the Onondaga Central School District Board of Education, has been honored as School Board Member of the Week, part of an eight-week campaign celebrating school board service by the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA).

The campaign – entitled “Do You Know Who I Am?” – tells the story of individual school board members such as Thousand and the contributions they make in their communities. The campaign runs through March 21.

Rita M. Lashway, CAE, deputy executive director of the New York State School Boards Association, has been honored with the 2013 Distinguished Member of the Year Award by The Empire State Society of Association Executives (ESSAE).

This award recognizes achievements by an ESSAE association member who has provided all-around leadership, both within his or her association and to the field at large.

"Rita is a tremendous leader. She is a visionary. In every instance of service, she reflects the highest standards of professionalism," said Penny Murphy, ESSAE president and CEO.

"All of us at NYSSBA are excited to see Rita be honored with this prestigious award," said Timothy G. Kremer, NYSSBA executive director. "Her leadership role at NYSSBA has been a great asset to ESSAE and to our organization."

Lashway has been the NYSSBA deputy executive director for 15 years.

Nearly seven in 10 school board members (69 percent) who responded to an informal poll by the New York State School Boards Association oppose adopting a proposed “alternative veterans exemption” that would provide a new property tax exemption for some veterans but would require other local taxpayers to make up the difference.

Twenty-one percent support the exemption, while 10 percent were unsure.

“School board members strongly support our veterans, but they believe that reimbursement for the veteran’s exemption should be covered by the state rather than by other local taxpayers,” said NYSSBA Executive Director Timothy G. Kremer. “The law as is presents school boards with a dilemma. If they adopt the exemption, that would increase taxes for other taxpayers in their district. If they do not adopt the exemption, they could be viewed as not being supportive of veterans.”

Deborah Schwarting, a member of the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES board, has been honored as School Board Member of the Week, as part of an eight-week campaign celebrating school board service by the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA).

The campaign – entitled “Do You Know Who I Am?” – tells the story of individual school board members such as Schwarting and the contributions they make in their communities. The campaign runs through March 21.

The state Board of Regents today adopted the recommendations in the following report concerning implementation of Common Core and APPR. NYSSBA will soon be providing an analysis of these actions.

School board members can help improve student achievement in their districts through proper allocation of resources, greater collaboration with state policymakers – particularly on Common Core implementation – and listening closely to staff.

Those are among the findings of a new research report on school board service by the New York State School Boards Association.
