Education Leaders Gather to Discuss Common Core and State Budget

Who:    Approximately 200 school board members, state education officials and elected leaders

What:   NYSSBA Capital Conference

When:  Sunday, March 9, 2014 from 3:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Where: Hilton Albany, 40 Lodge Street, Albany, NY

The New York State budget and its effect on public education have been in the headlines this year.   Topics have included school funding, Common Core, school mergers and many other key areas.

The New York State School Boards Association has gathered some of New York’s top leaders to discuss these important topics.  State Education Commissioner John King, Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch and State Budget Director Robert Megna will headline this year’s NYSSBA Capital Conference. 

Beginning at 3:30 p.m., a Reform Agenda Town Hall meeting will be held with King and Tisch.  

Following the town hall session, a state budget update and roundtable discussion will begin at 4:30 p.m.

The lineup for the budget discussion is:

  • Robert Megna, New York State Budget Director
  • John DeFrancisco, Chair, Senate Finance Committee
  • Charles Szuberla, Assistant  State Education Commissioner
  • Moderator-Liz Benjamin, Anchor & Host, Capital Tonight

Beginning at 6:30 p.m., Bruce Gyrory, Senior Advisor, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP will provide evening remarks, followed by special awards presented to:

  • State Legislative Freshmen Leaders of the Year - Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk and Assembly Member Patricia Fahy 
  • Advocates of the Year - Russell Stewart, Waterville Board of Education member and Daniel Tomaszewski, Longwood Board of Education member
  • Board Advocacy Leadership - Utica City Board of Education members-Christopher Salatino, Louis LaPolla, Margaret Buckley, Donald Dawes, Evon Ervin, Michele Mandia, and Michael Paul
