Advocacy Update: Federal Issues

As the August district work period approaches, the Senate has delayed coming back to their home districts in order to continue efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Yesterday, the Senate considered legislation that would repeal the ACA, including proposed cuts to Medicaid funding for school districts. However, there were inadequate votes to pass the bill.
Efforts continue to eliminate and reduce Medicaid and other federal funding streams that are vital to school districts.
Take action to prevent these cuts! Consider passing a board resolution opposing cuts to education funding, including Medicaid. Send a letter to your federal representatives. A sample resolution and link to the NYSSBA action center are below.

NYSED Releases Revisions to State ESSA Plan
Last week, the Board of Regents released revisions to the Draft State Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plan. The Board indicated that they intend to finalize the draft plan and send to the Executive for review in the days to come. The current revised plan and additional information can be viewed below.
