Statement by NYSSBA Executive Director Timothy G. Kremer on grades 3-8 math/English language arts test results

While this year’s transition to new two-day math and English language arts assessments makes it impossible to compare overall results with past years, we are pleased to see that revisions to this year’s exams have resulted in students spending less time on each test.
In addition, we are encouraged that the exams are being prepared with greater involvement by New York educators, who are writing and reviewing the questions and established the revised grade-level performance standards. These changes will provide a better foundation for measuring future student progress against this year’s proficiency levels of 45.2 percent for English language arts and 40.2 percent for math.
We hope that assessment results for the next two years will clearly demonstrate the benefits of New York’s ongoing work to improve standards and instruction for our students.
