Advocacy Update: 2018 Business Meeting Results

October 29, 2018

Delegates at the 2018 Annual Business Meeting engaged in significant debate on a number of issues. This year, the delegates were presented twenty resolutions, nineteen of which were adopted. In addition the delegates elected NYSSBA officers for 2019.

These positions will remain in effect for five years, unless they are rescinded or achieved sooner. As a result, the NYSSBA Governmental Relations team will work toward advancing those proposals that would require legislative change to be implemented.

A full list of the adopted position statements can be found below. NYSSBA's complete list of 2019 Position Statements will be distributed in the future.

Testimony on Health, Mental Health and Physical Education in Public Education

On October 23, 2018, NYSSBA's Governmental Relations team provided testimony at a hearing hosted by the Assembly Education Chair Cathy Nolan addressing health, mental health and physical education in schools.

The hearing provided members of the Education Committee, as well as other members of the Assembly, with feedback from stakeholders regarding the changing needs of students in regards to their physical and mental health needs, the newly required mental health curriculum, and the infrastructure needs of districts seeking to better deliver health and mental health services and physical education.

NYSSBA's written testimony can be viewed below.

NYSSBA's Governmental Relations team will continue to report on these and other issues. For more information, visit our Key Issues Page.
