One hundred custom board retreats in a single year - that's a milestone!
NYSSBA recognized the staff members and adjuncts who facilitated the retreats throughout 2018 during a year-end meeting at the NYSSBA offices in Latham.
Custom board retreats (CBRs) are on-site programs tailored to meet the specific needs of a school board or governance team. They help set goals, strengthen the governance team, improve specific knowledge and skills or resolve a conflict. The retreats are scheduled at a time and place convenient to the board - weekday, evening or weekend.
Other popular CBR topics, include roles and responsibilities, team building, goal setting, and board/superintendent evaluations, according to Darci D'Ercole, NYSSBA's director of leadership development.
At the meeting, facilitators shared experiences and best practices with each other. They focused specifically on conflict management and trust-building. They also addressed challenges involving school boards and social media.
NYSSBA has a cadre of 19 adjuncts who, along with NYSSBA staff, deliver CBRs. D'Ercole praised the adjuncts (10 were able to attend) for their contributions. "You are the face of NYSSBA," she said.
Jay Worona, deputy executive director and general counsel, added, "We really appreciate your efforts because you enable NYSSBA to serve members all over the state. We thank you for all you do."
