NYSSBA’S Capital Conference also features NYS Teacher of the Year

MEDIA ADVISORY and PHOTO OPPORTUNITY 

Who:    More than 200 school board members and education officials 

What:   New York State School Boards Association annual "Capital Conference."
New York State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia and Assistant Counsel to Governor Cuomo Terry Pratt will discuss key issues facing New York’s schoolchildren. Pratt will review the executive budget proposals and NYS Teacher of the Year Alhassan Susso will speak at Sunday’s dinner. Monday morning, hear from Senator Shelley Mayer, Chair, Senate Education Committee.

When:  Sunday, February 10 from 12:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. and  Monday, February 11 from 8:00-9:30 a.m.

2:30-3:15 p.m. Terry Pratt, Assistant Counsel to Governor Andrew Cuomo 
Pratt will discuss the Governor's budget proposal and executive priorities. 

3:15-4:15 p.m. A Conversation with the Commissioner MaryEllen Elia
Renaissance Hotel
The commissioner will discuss current issues facing New York school boards and answer questions.

7:30-9:00 p.m. Dinner with NYS Teacher of the Year
Albany Capital Center
Alhassan Susso, a social studies teacher at the International Community High School a part of the NYC School District and an immigrant from West Africa, will speak about how he uses his personal journey to expand his students’ worldview. 

Monday, February 11 
8:00-9:30 a.m.  Kiara Mantz, Bolton High School student & Senator Shelley Mayer, Senate Education Chair
Albany Capital Center 

Kiara Mantz, a senior in the Bolton Central School District and a member of the YMCA Youth and Government Program.
Kiara will talk about her experience with public education and the importance of advocacy as illustrated through her experience as head lobbyist for the program. 

Senator Shelley Mayer, Chair, Senate Education Committee 
Hear from the Senate Education chair on the Senate Majority's legislative and budgetary priorities.
