Advocacy Alert: Transportation Aid Call to Action
November 18, 2020
On November 6th, the State Education Department released a memorandum confirming that transportation expenses incurred by districts during the period of time schools were required by the Governor to go remote and develop plans to distribute meals for students - mid March through the end of the school year in June - would not be eligible for transportation aid. Statewide, this may result in a loss of approximately half of a billion dollars in state aid.
We are calling upon all of our members to take action. We have created a letter that you may easily send to your state legislators, as well as the Governor's office. While not necessary, we encourage you to edit and personalize the letter as you see fit.
NYSSBA, along with the six other state associations that make up the Educational Conference Board, distributed a memo to all relevant policy makers and state agencies stressing the devastation this decision would have on school districts, as well as the need for immediate legislative action to ensure and affirm that transportation aid would be provided for all transportation expenses incurred during the pandemic.
We thank you for taking the time to join in this effort and encourage you to share this letter with your community members.
NYSSBA's Governmental Relations team will continue to report on these and other issues. For more information, visit our Key Issues Page and be sure to keep up with NYSSBA on Facebook and Twitter.
