Advocacy Alert: Take Action to restore the SALT deduction

April 26,2021

Congress has the opportunity to consider the repeal of the federal cap that was placed on the tax deduction for state and local taxes (SALT) in 2017.

The limit imposed on the SALT deduction has jeopardized access to essential public services. Chief among these is public education. The after-tax cost to taxpayers of these services has effectively increased.  This capping of the SALT deduction has put unnecessary pressure on school district budgets. In the wake of federal tax liability increasing since the imposition of the cap, many taxpayers have looked for relief at the local level.

NYSSBA is calling on all officials elected to represent our state to end the federal cap on state and local tax (SALT) deduction.

The Governmental Relations team invites you to take action by reaching out to your federal representatives as they debate the SALT cap. We have created a letter that you may edit with district-specific information, or send as is. Simply click on the links below and follow the prompts. You are welcome to share these letters with members of your community.

Take Action

NYSSBA's Governmental Relations team will continue to report on these and other issues.  For more information, visit our Key Issues Page
