Regional Workshops
In-person regional workshops are a popular training modality for NYSSBA members. Topics focus on board leadership and governance, team roles and responsibilities, new member orientation, emerging issues, legal matters and policy. Members benefit with the ability to network with other school board members and learn about best practices in other districts.

GOV 101: Essentials of School Board Governance Serving on a board of education is a daunting task for even the most seasoned board member, let alone a novice. This critical daylong academy provides hands-on knowledge and tools that will help you confidently fulfill your governance, legal, and fiscal responsibilities. Learn the ropes of school boardsmanship. Gain an understanding of the board-superintendent relationship, key operational procedures for board meetings, Open Meetings Law, and legal rights, risks and responsibilities. GOV 201: Board Officer Academy Board leadership has never been more challenging and with it comes the responsibility to influence on behalf of all students. NYSSBA is ready to help you take your board to a new level! You’ll learn about the board’s expanding role in student achievement, examine how the board president helps create and maintains the board culture and performance and understand the importance of superintendent performance and leadership.

FIS 101: Fiscal Oversight Fundamentals Fulfill your state-mandated six hours of fiscal training that you are required to take within your first year. Learn how school districts are funded, the responsibilities of financial positions, the key reports you'll need to rely on, and how to spot fraud, waste and abuse of resources.
