Fred J. Langstaff - Immediate Past President

Fred J. Langstaff was Immediate Past President of the New York State School Boards Association until his passing in August 2023.
NYSSBA provides advocacy, training and information to school boards in support of their mission to govern the state’s public schools. The NYSSBA board establishes policies to supervise, control and direct the business of the Association. Langstaff chaired the Executive Committee and was Board Liaison to the Resolutions Committee. He was on the Operations Committee and the Investment Advisory Committee.
Langstaff was a member of the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Board since 1998 and the board’s clerk since 2003. Previously, he served nine years on the Sayville School Board, where he was president for one year and vice president for two years.
Langstaff was active in state and federal advocacy. He co-chaired the legislative committee at Eastern Suffolk BOCES and was on the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Legislative committee.
Langstaff was a founding member of both the 1108 Communication Credit Union and the Sayville Civic Association. He was also a member of the Sayville Chamber of Commerce.
Langstaff retired from Verizon where he worked as an outside plant technician for 32 years. He earned an associate degree in applied science telecommunication technology from Suffolk County Community College.
Langstaff is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Debby, who lives in Sayville and his two grown children and two grandchildren.
