Position Description:
The East Rochester Union Free School District, located in Monroe County, just southeast of the City of Rochester in New York State, is seeking an outstanding educational leader to assume the role of Superintendent of Schools. Mr. Daniel White, Monroe One BOCES District Superintendent, and I are collaborating on this search, providing assistance to the Board of Education for this most important decision. This letter is intended to bring this leadership opportunity to your attention for your own interest, or for the interest of others you feel are excellent candidates for the position. The District serves a residential, easily accessible village of about 7,000, plus approximately 1,200 residents in parts of the towns of Pittsford and Perinton. About 250 faculty, support staff and administrators make up the team of dedicated employees who support East Rochester’s 1,047 students. But perhaps more notably, East Rochester is the only district in Monroe County to house 14 grades, Universal Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12, in one comprehensive, state-of-the-art building. The Elementary School is comprised of grades Pre-Kindergarten through five, the Middle Level Academy houses grades 6-8 and the High School educates students in grades 9-12. Building on its core values of Students First - Opportunity - Achievement - Responsibility - Strength (SOARS), East Rochester proudly offers excellent academics, diverse extra-curricular offerings and a supportive, enriching environment that allows all students to challenge excellence. The District offers outstanding performing arts, in-house culinary arts and competitive interscholastic athletic programs as but a few examples of the comprehensive nature of the learning atmosphere.

Qualifications:
Also as part of its community outreach the Board collected input regarding the educational challenges ahead for the District and the professional experiences and personal characteristics the next Superintendent should possess. After a careful review of that information, the Board has determined that the ideal candidate will be:

  • A respected and successful educator with classroom teaching and building and/or central office administrative experiences, who has demonstrated the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with all constituencies, making decisions grounded in the best interest of students and the school community.
  • A school administrator with an understanding of the finance and human resource functions who can advise, oversee and/or conduct related activities providing ongoing leadership by charting a reasonable and thoughtful approach to challenges in both areas facing the District.
  • A creative thinker and visionary who will work with the Board of Education and the school community to facilitate a strategic planning process for determining priorities and focus for the work of the staff.
  • A proven instructional leader who will embrace cultural as well socio-economic diversity and one who will work closely with staff to provide multiple learning opportunities for students and lead sensible improvements and innovations in curriculum and instruction building upon the academic successes of the District.
  • An energetic educator of the utmost integrity and character who will become an integral part of the school community, be regularly visible and will lead in an atmosphere of mutual respect and accountability. The Superintendent will be provided with a regionally competitive salary and benefits package. Position Title:
Chief Academic Officer

Position Description:
Reporting directly to the Deputy Superintendent, the Chief Academic Officer sets strategic vision and direction for the instructional framework and pedagogical approach to RCSD’s academic programs and is a key lever to accomplish RCSD’ five key goals. The CAO is the leader, spokesperson, and resident expert on curriculum, instruction, pedagogy, and learning. This role develops short and long-term instructional vision for RCSD and works establishing a culture of high expectation and shared responsibility for equitable access to high quality and culturally relevant instruction. The CAO works to create authentic partnerships between district offices and schools ensuring closer alignment of district resources with school needs, to implement an instructional plan for the district ensuring effective teaching in every classroom, and to create conditions that ensure systemic improvement of practice over time in every classroom. The CAO will work closely with the other members of the Executive Leadership Team. RCSD’s goals are:

  • Achieve a 5% increase in the graduation rate between August 2019 and August 2020.
  • Increase student proficiency in ELA and math by 7% by August 2020.
  • Reduce the disproportionate special education classification of students of color and the disproportionate suspension of students of color by 1.5% by 2020; and increase the enrollment of students of color in advanced coursework by 5% by June 2020.
  • Reduce chronic absenteeism by 5% by June 2020.
  • In order to better define parent/family engagement by June 2020, we will ensure there is an active Student Leadership Group in all high schools and that all schools will meaningfully engage families in School-Based Planning Team process, in accordance with the School-Based Planning Team manual. 

Qualifications:

  • NYS Certification in teaching and educational administration.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience educational leadership, with a record of successfully impacting student achievement and working successfully with students who have the greatest needs.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience teaching, with a record of successfully impacting student achievement and working successfully with students who have the greatest needs
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience formally or informally coaching teachers, managing and facilitating professional development and/or curriculum development programs, and/ or designing professional development modules.
  • Specific evidence of system orientation such as the invention of processes or programs which improve student learning with demonstrable evidence.
  • Demonstrable evidence of prior success in leading work related to curriculum and instruction.
  • Proven ability to work cooperatively and effectively with colleagues, including the ability to create and nurture a professional community of adult learners.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and strong interpersonal skills, including giving and receiving constructive feedback.
  • Proven ability in using data to guide instructional decisions.
  • Proven ability in curriculum development work, including experience such as but not limited to: working through the entire curriculum development process from philosophy to daily lesson writing; creating strong lessons from given curriculum, modifying existing lessons; and creating curriculum maps to align to District, state, or national standards.
  • Strong pedagogical knowledge and content expertise.
  • Demonstrated expertise in oral and written communication.
