School Budget Votes
The New York State School Boards Association tracks and maintains historical data related to statewide school budget votes including school budget vote approvals and defeats for school districts who put their budgets up for a public vote.*
*All school districts must put their school spending plans before voters except the Big 5 City School Districts and special act school districts.
Annual Budget Vote and School Board Election Timeline
Under New York law the school budget vote and election occurs on the third Tuesday in May, unless a district files a request with the commissioner of education to move the date to the second Tuesday in May based upon a conflict with a religious observance. In the past, NYSSBA posted timelines for the budget vote and election cycle for a couple of upcoming years. However, in recent years based upon statutory amendments that affected the budget timelines the Association has determined it is best to discontinue such practice to prevent our members from relying on previously posted information that is changed by subsequent amendments. To account for any statutory changes that may occur during the legislative session, timelines for the budget vote and election will be posted in the fall each year.
