Anne L. Bryant, recently retired as executive director of the National School Boards Association (NSBA), has been named the 2012 New York State School Boards Association’s President’s Award winner.
The President’s Award recognizes individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions toward the betterment of public education in New York. It is the highest tribute that the Association bestows outside its membership.
“Anne has done extraordinary advocacy work on behalf of NYSSBA and other state school boards associations to improve student achievement,” said NYSSBA President Thomas Nespeca, a member of the Webster school board near Rochester.
Bryant retired in September from NSBA after 16 years, where she led a federation of state and territorial organizations dedicated to advancing education through citizen governance of public schools. The federation reaches over 14,890 school districts involving 95,000 school board members.
Prior to joining NSBA, Bryant was executive director of the American Association of University Women, a national organization advancing equity for women and girls in education, the workplace, and the family. From 1974 to 1986, she was vice president of the Professional Education Division of P.M. Haeger & Associates, a Chicago association management firm.
Bryant has written widely on K-12 education, volunteer-staff leadership issues, and the role of the federal government in education. She holds an Ed.D. from the University of Massachusetts and a B.A. from Simmons College.
Bryant was honored during the Association’s 93rd Annual Convention in Rochester on Thursday, Oct. 25.
