The New York State School Boards Association has updated its popular School Board Member Experience website for 2020 with an expanded collection of resources for New Yorkers seeking to learn more about school board service.

The user-friendly site offers a virtual journey from the decision to run for school board through the first year of service. The portion of the site dedicated to the petition-filing process includes filing deadlines: April 20 this year for most school districts and April 29 for small city districts.

The website can be accessed directly at https://www.nyssba.org/experience .

"When candidates and potential candidates go looking for a better understanding of what school board service is all about – and the commitment it entails, they often turn to current board members, superintendents and district clerks for guidance. We’ve designed this site to be a resource for these go-to local experts, as well as candidates," said NYSSBA Executive Director Robert S. Schneider.

The locally elected board of education is a uniquely American institution and an essential component of local decision-making and governance in New York. Yet, parts of our state see a dearth of candidates each year. A 2019 NYSSBA survey found that at least 37 districts lacked enough candidates to fill all of their school board vacancies during the spring election cycle.

The School Board Member Experience provides a one-stop digital location to find accurate, up-to-date information about eligibility to run, deadlines, board meeting protocols, basic roles and responsibilities and more.

NYSSBA launched the site in early 2019, and during its first year of operation, the site drew more than 5,000 visitors. "From the initial response, we can see that local school officials and school board candidates are finding our site to be a helpful resource," Schneider said.

The School Board Member Experience also can help all members of the public understand the mission and responsibilities of their local boards and board members.

"We hope the information we have provided on this website will foster a wider appreciation of the work school boards do and of the generous contributions of time individual board members dedicate on behalf of our communities and children throughout New York," Schneider said. "Well-informed voters are essential to the school board election process."
