Statement of New York State School Boards Association Executive Director Robert Schneider on Election of Lester Young as Regents Chancellor

FOR RELEASE: January 11, 2021

We congratulate Regent Lester W. Young, Jr. on his election as chancellor of the New York State Board of Regents, and we celebrate his historic role as New York’s first African American Regents chancellor.

In addition to more than a dozen years of dedicated service as an at-large Regent, Dr. Young brings rich personal and professional experience with our state’s students and educational system. Most recently, he has chaired the Regents P-12 Education Committee, where our schools have benefitted from his expansive grasp of the issues and challenges facing students and school districts throughout the state.

As a leader in launching New York’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative, he has distinguished himself as a champion for our state’s young men and boys of color. He has worked in our public schools as a teacher and administrator, served as an assistant and associate commissioner in the state Education Department and dedicated his entire career to New York’s students in innumerable ways.

We also thank Vice Chancellor T. Andrew Brown for his outstanding leadership of the Board of Regents following former Chancellor Betty Rosa’s acceptance of an appointment as interim education commissioner. We congratulate Vice Chancellor Brown on his upcoming term as president of the New York State Bar Association, where we know he also will serve with distinction.

New York is fortunate to have such accomplished and dedicated leaders to carry the torch of educational excellence and equity forward in the Empire State. We look forward to working together with Chancellor Young, Interim Commissioner Rosa, the Board of Regents and the entire State Education Department on our shared vision for New York’s students and schools.
