Statement from the New York State School Boards Association on the State Budget |
FOR RELEASE: May 28, 2026
NYSSBA welcomes the state’s continued investment in Foundation Aid, specifically a minimum two percent increase for all school districts. In addition, the five-year delay of the zero-emission school bus mandate is a significant development for school districts. NYSSBA has consistently advocated for a more realistic implementation timeline, citing the major infrastructure, operational and financial challenges districts face in transitioning their bus fleets to zero emission vehicles.
While this year’s budget provides meaningful support, many districts are still operating under significant financial pressure. Specifically, many districts continue to face rising expenses that are outpacing revenues, with more than three-quarters of districts now receiving only the minimum aid increase. The overwhelming majority of districts are seeing school aid increases below the rate of inflation. We will continue working with state leaders to ensure schools have the resources and flexibility needed to meet those challenges going forward.
With one week remaining in the legislative session, we look forward to working with policymakers on priorities including school safety, budget efficiency and flexibility and other measures that help districts better manage ongoing financial challenges.
